The Modern Blood

" Remember, a lesson of history. It takes one generation for a new breakthrough." - Modern Collective

Years ago, at the start of the new foam shortboard era, The Beach Boys era, surfing transformed from a sport that only lords of men partook in to the largest growing sport in the world. A handful of known surfers suddenly turned into millions across the globe. During that time, and to this day surfing has taken stereotypes such as " Lazy, blonde haired, blue eyed bums." Since then, surfing's World Tour has taken off, 44 of the world's top surfers competing in a 12 event tour year after year. Contest, contest, contest, numbers, numbers, numbers. The repetitiveness it mind blowing. These surfers train, watch their health, eat well, constantly thinking numbers "Need a 3.75 to move on to the next round. Your ahead by a 2.7."

How could we let surfing get to this point? So many stereotypes. Surfing has become some prep sport like a Varsity Football team. Matching team jackets, popped collars, brush cuts, muscles, glory, team cheer, clubs.

" Remember a lesson of history, It takes one generation for a new breakthrough"

Now, there is a new blood rising, a handful of grubby surfers, a group that preaches screw contests, screw glory, fame, fortune, health, carb watch, training, stereotypes. Names of Mitch Coleborn, Craig Anderson, Dion Agius, Chippa, and Dane Reynolds. This is surfing's future. A future filled with patchy mustaches, long unruly hair, tight jeans, odd jewelry, fashion, art, techno-instrumentals. We'll trade in our 6'7's for stubby 5'10's, trade a perfect hollow overhead left, for an crumbly peak, offshore point breaks, for an onshore, side-wind beach break, rash-guards, for saggy tanks, expensive tide watches for cheap bracelettes, our home decorations fall from a Leonardo Divinci masterpiece to a child's doodles, everyday diets fall from protein drinks, vegetables to greasy burgers and beer, instead of sponsored clothing we wear animal shirts, and jean cutt-offs. Instead of a clean barrel, we'll punt a full rotation air reverse. Instead of a flowing man-carve, a fin-ditch. Instead of a top turn, a blasting fin-waft. Instead of a cutback, a backside tweaked-out alley-oop air reverse.

We are Surfing's future, We are the Modern Blood.
